Sitting in the Aisle

It's kinda like getting an e-mail from John about what movie he just saw, well, kinda, sorta.

Poseidon (Film)

Have you ever flipped through the tv channels on a late night and came into the middle of a movie that was compelling enough for you to stop and watch the rest of it? Sometimes you might even feel compelled to catch the beginning and you find that coming in the middle was more preferable. Well, seeing Poseidon is a lot like that. It feels like they took a 2 1/2 hour movie and cut out the first hour. It feels a lot like what Titanic would be if you started watching it five minutes before the iceberg hit. It's not a bad movie and parts are good, but you do feel as if you missed something, like character development.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of.

In the original, before the wave hits, a lot of time is spent developing the characters (and perhaps too much time, at that). Even so, they're still pretty corny characters -- lovable, but corny -- save, perhaps, for the Gene Hackman role. Here you'll find a very interesting and controversial character. Hackman plays a sort-of rebel minister who is very much a believer in the "Ours is an angry and challenging God" school of thought. The whole film plays along with that notion in mind...that you will suffer and sacrifice if you expect to survive -- and even THEN you may not catch a break.

I read somewhere the Gene Hackman character was split into 2 characters: ex-firefighter and ex-Mayor of New York played by Kurt Russell and a professional gambler played by Josh Lucas. I assumed Hackman was somewhere in between. I never would have guessed he was a minister.
